fuhgeddaboudit!

Ghislaine reconsiders!  the latest message from her sez...

I didn't see you had to be a member..so I just stick to my first idea which was to find nice "chambres d'hôtes" and you are right if this is too difficult I can always find a nice hotel....
will be working  on the project again on Wednesday...
take care

Message from Ghislaine--What is your opinion?

Ann,

looking for group  accommodation in Lyon I  found this ...I have a phone appointment with a lady from there tomorrow but first I want to ask you.....the positive is that you are all together, it's not in the city center but in a very easy reach ...my question , is the point for you to find something ok and cheap or is the group a rather well-off group who wants nice  but more expansive accommodation...as their website is in English i send you the link.....read it and tell me..; I won't be available until 9 pm from now on but I'll check my messages when I come back talk to you..
Ghislaine

It may be a little bare bones.  Check out the link and see what you think.  Also--it seems that you have to be a member of their group to use the facility.  Now, if everyone has to be a member, that could be a very expensive hostel experience! Go to the link at the top of this message and check it out and please post your comment.  Majority rules--if it is affordable!

Planning Session

Sausage making is a high art in Lyon, as shown in this photo from Les Halles
Selection of place specific oysters at Merle in Les Halles.
Desserts at the Patissiere in Les Halles.
Just off a skype video call with Nathalie and Ghislaine, discussing the nitty gritty--dates and actual itinerary.  Here is what we have come up with.  We all should plan to meet in Lyon on May 5, which means flying out on May 4th to arrive the next day.  Ghislaine is looking for a place for us all near the old town in that fabulous food city.  During our 2 days on our own in Lyon, we will definitely visit Les Halles de Lyon, a venerable old building housing 59 food traders and craftsmen where we will also have an oyster (for seafood lovers) lunch at Merle.  There will be something for everyone. Ghislaine is looking into a hammam (spa) visit for us as well, though that is for ladies only during the day.  Gentlemen's appointments are in the evening only.  She will send the line and we can check the prices for services which range form 10-15 euros to 50 euros, depending on what you choose. There is a lot to see in the old town and a wonderful basilica on a hill that we hiked to last year.  Two days in Lyon will likely be not enough!

On Saturday afternoon we will go to Cogny though not too early because she has a group in there the week before and will need to get our rooms ready.  We can deposit our luggage and then get up to the Beaujolais region for the Fete des Cru banquet Saturday night.  It's about a 40 minute drive up to Fleurie and the banquet is one of the main events.  We'll drive back afterwards and settle into our rooms and then drive back to Fleurie the next day for the village celebration.

Sketch for the week:
Monday--early morning trip to market in Villefranche and to a supermarket for self-catering supplies  then a Monday afternoon hike/drive to the chapel on the Cote de Brouilly for a memorial service

Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday--not sure what will happen on which day, but the general plan is 2 dinners out during the week (in addition to the banquet) and daytime visits to a fromagerie (goat cheese farm) and a heullerie (artisan oil producer), with side trips to a local willow basket weaver, a visit to a country house market, and a tour of a local wine museum.  The abbey at Cluny is a possibility, but an all day trip.Nathalie and Ghislaine will do a preliminary tour in the next month or so to help us to narrow the many options.  And, oh yeah--the COOKING CLASSES!  For those interested, there will be four during the week that focus on French fundamentals and regional specialties..Ghislaine has generously suggested that we use the kitchen in her house for the lessons. There will also be WINE APPRECIATION CLASSES each evening (maybe in the cellar?) that focus on the various cru Beaujolais that we are introduced to at the festival.

Important notes:  The maximum capacity at Les Buis des Chardonnet is 14 and that is tight.  How we fit into a vehicle/vehicles for ground transportation is also limited. Ghisliane will email me the anticipated cost of the week for lodging and transportation and I will then send that info via email to everyone on the list who has indicated that they want to participate.  Her bank told her that it is best if we send a travellers check with the deposit.  I will check with my bank to see if there is a way to make a bank transfer but once she sends the estimate it will be up to each person on the list to make her/his own deposit and airline reservation. The dates for the stay at her property are May 7 to the 14th. We are looking at staying in Lyon on May 5 and 6.  Departure dates will depend on flight arrangements.  It may be hard to get to the Lyon airport from Cogny for a 6 am flight.  I'm planning on flying out on Sunday, maybe staying in a hotel near the airport the night of the 14th.

So--I need to know who is on the list for certain and will take blood relatives first.  Why?  because they will be more forgiving of me if this is a total fiasco. Next tier:  those who responded first.

Ghislaine's Response, 1/20

Here is Les Buis des Chardonnet under construction last May. Gite and rooms on left, cellar in center, Perroud home on the right.  Organic vines on the hillside.

Moving forward, slow but sure.  My comments are in italics.  We will try to skype again this weekend.
From Ghislaine...
got some answers from Nathalie !
we have snow again tonight...not much compared to what we had previously but still....
I talk to Aleks (Herve's wife and Ghislaine and Nathalie's sister-in-law, Chateau du Briante)today, I forward  your blog address to her...
I have an appointment with my bank tomorrow morning ......(to see how we can make a deposit)
I picked out some nice addresses of chambres d'hôtes on the Fourvière hill (in Lyon)so as soon as you make up your mind about dates I can check about their avaibilities.the prices are 55/65  euros for one place, 85  euros for the 2ND one and 95 euros for the 3rd place; I imagine you would have to be in separate places being a group of about 1é, but they are all in the same area...prices are to give you a rough idea ; we might find less expensive but these are close to the old part of Lyon .
I got addresses for van or car rentals from the tourist office...I phone them tomorrow to check their prices with and without a driver...
I try to send you the link to the hammam; unfortunately it's only in French...it's just information for a start because we can check on others...one of my friends in Lyon is a hammam fan so I 'll ask her too what her favourite would be !!!

Just trying to keep everyone in the loop!  Gone tomorrow to Celia's shower! More on Sunday.

CH-CH-CH-Changes!

Market in Lyon
Just the first of many, I'm guessing.  Ghislaine's email message to me this morning explained that the best dates for us to consider staying at her house are Saturday, May 7 to Saturday, May 14.  Question is--do we just all plan to meet in Lyon on May 6 instead of May 4th--or to stick with the plan of flying on May 3 and stay an extra couple of nights in Lyon?  Or should we plan to just get into Lyon on the 7th and head right up to Cogny and maybe "do" Lyon at the other end of the trip?  Not sure.  Will need input from Nathalie and Ghislaine as to what makes the most sense.

The other big news is that John has decided to come, which is good because he can be in charge of the wine education component of the trip-heh heh.

The best advice I can give is to check flights for multiple days.  Post them in the comments if you find a good price. We should be acting on the information in about a week, if we get all the particulars in order. What I hear from Moira and Mary is that British Airways has the best prices.  The more people that are looking, the better our options. Don't be discouraged; yes, it is complicated, but not impossible.  Rent Julie and Julia to get inspired.

Coming Together!

Ghislaine at the threshold of their home last May, when it was under construction.
Just got off a Skype video call with Nathalie and Michel in Grenoble and Ghislaine in Cogny.  Ain't life grand! We discussed the very beginnings of a plan for the week at Cogny as well as the two days and one night in Lyon.  Ghislaine is going to look into ground transportation for what looks like a dozen of us.  She is also going to get us a rough estimate on the costs involved for the night in Lyon, the hammam spa visit, transportation and the week at her place.  We aren't sure how to transfer money, but the next step is to make a deposit to hold the gite and 3 rooms for our week in May.  Meanwhile, here is a link that Michel Fraisse sent about the Fete des Crus, which will be one of our weekend highlights. He said that it is in French but that there is a video at the site that you don't need French to understand.  Scroll down, look on the right side and click on "Film"

About the Wines

Herve and Alex Longefay welcome guests to their cellar at Chateau du Briante

Though known primarily for the Beaujolais Nouveau popularized as a marketing gimmick, the Gamay grape is a lush varietal that can be interpreted in many ways.  The wines of Beaujolais can be very complex--though always approachable. We plan to seriously consider the cru Beaujolais while learning all about the foods of the region, with an emphasis on healthy, fresh and organic products.

May 3 to May 13, 2011 The Plan

Tour the scenic Beaujolais region this spring.  Land in your choice of Paris (about a 2 hour train ride) or Lyon (about a 30 minute car ride) and spend a couple of days in Lyon, considered by many to be the gastronomic mecca of France.  On Thursday, May 5 check into Ghislaine and Michel Perroud's environmentally friendly Les Buis des Chardonnet in the village of Cogny and use it as our base for a busy week of food and wine-centric adventure.  Activities include the weekend festival of the cru release and an "inside the castle" tour of Chateau du Briante by winemakers Alex and Herve Longefay.  Monday through Thursday will feature various regional tours of cheesemakers, bakers, and farmers in a region that has been described as the most picturesque in all of France.  Daily cooking lessons will teach French basics and focus on regional specialties.

Corr's Tours

Inaugural friends and family culinary tour of the Beaujolais region of France.  This is the alpha trip. If all goes well, there will be a beta launch in November as well for the nouveau release.
